Over the last fourteen years, Creatively Speaking has become known as an ongoing forum presenting independently produced media that conveys a realistic, universal portrayal of people of color to audiences within and across communities of color and beyond. Since 1996, the film program has been an annual 3-day event at Harlem Stage (formerly Aaron Davis Hall), curated by Michelle Materre and Kathryn Bowser. The series was designed to bring work by independent filmmakers of color to the audiences for which the work was originally intended. In 1999, marketing and publicity specialist Neyda Martinez joined Michelle as producer of the series, and as a result, the program has now become a mainstay in the cultural communities of Harlem and now Brooklyn with our opening at Brooklyn Academy of Music’s BAM Cinematek this past March, 2007. Creatively Speaking is now expanding as a national forum with a new touring program which takes advantage of the traditional aspects of the program as a place for audiences to speak directly with filmmakers, as well as launching the dialogue into new locations, both on-site and virtually. This website marks the launch of this program as the latest dimension of Creatively Speaking.
